Mark Gridley Freelance Archaeological Illustrator

About

Since graduating in 1993 with a 2/1 degree in Interior Design I have worked extensively within many areas relating to my studies, these include illustration, museum and corporate exhibition design, retail/office, furniture and toy design, fibreglass and clay modelling, as well as set and event design.

Having a love of art and natural ability to paint and draw I decided to redirect and combine the experience gained through my profession with my enthusiasm and passion for illustration and archaeology by entering the Archaeological Illustration Postgraduate course at Swindon college in 2006. After completing my Masters in Archaeological Illustration with a distinction in 2008, I went on to work for one of the largest archaeological units in the UK - Oxford Archaeology,, as a member of their graphics team.

Over the 3 years with Oxford Archaeology I gained invaluable insight and experience to commercial archaeology and archaeological illustration through work on hundreds of illustrations for client reports, museum displays, posters and popular publications, all the while specialising in reconstruction illustration. In 2010 I was involved in the exhibition design of the Archaeology Discovery Centre in Xi’an China which is part of the Daming Palace Heritage Park.

Since moving on in 2011 I have been working in the same area on a freelance basis from North Devon. I have worked with numerous clients on a number of interesting and at times high profile projects, including work done for the Natural History Museum of London, Dorset County Museum, Cotswold Archaeology, University of Reading, Institute of Archaeology Oxford and Morocco and others.

My work has appeared in a wide range of publications and displays including the Current and British Archaeology magazines, numerous academic and popular publications alongside museum and heritage displays and posters.

I am proficient in Adobe CS suite and although my main forte is archaeological interpretation, illustration and reconstruction, I am able to work on projects ranging from finds illustrations and report figures through to Interior and Exhibition design.

I am a professional with excellent interpersonal skills, 20 years of varied drafting, illustrative, design and practical archaeological experience. I have exceptional time management, work well to deadlines and have an excellent eye for detail and scale. I’m able to integrate new skills and techniques quickly whilst working as part of a team or when responsible for my own initiative.

No job is too big or too small and I can work to most budgets. Feel free to contact me, as I am always happy to discuss commissions and projects.
